Introduction to Dementia for Care Home Staff and Healthcare

Description:  This course has been specifically designed to increase the knowledge and skills of care workers and healthcare support staff in providing high quality direct care to people living with dementia. The programme examines:

Dementia for Professional Staff Working in Acute Care

Description: This course is designed to improve the knowledge and awareness of healthcare professionals and clinical support staff in providing support to patients experiencing delirium and/or dementia.

Learning outcomes: By the end of the training, participants will be able to demonstrate:

  • an understanding of the value of personhood and person centred care for patients experiencing delirium and/or dementia
  • a sensitivity to the holistic needs of patients experiencing delirium and/or dementia
  • an awareness of the holistic factors that contribute to the delirium and/or dementia
  • an awareness of patient safety and likely outcomes if effective assessment and treatment is delayed
  • an understanding of strategies to help reduce non-cognitve symptoms of dementia that can impact on a person’s quality of life

Promoting Safe and Therapeutic Services for People with Dementia and Old Age Mental Health Issues

Description: A 5 day course aimed at healthcare professionals and clinical support staff to learn about the management of violence and aggression. The programme is underpinned by person-centred care and psychological approaches to dementia and old age mental health care. Specialist techniques have been designed for the vulnerability and frailty of older people.

Learning outcomes: By the end of the course, healthcare professionals and clinical support staff will:

  • Understand the concept and importance of person centred care for older people with dementia and or other mental health problems
  • Understand the value of personhood and the patient’s narrative in helping inform care delivery
  • Recognise the need for an awareness of communication issues experienced by people with dementia
  • Understand the dementia related causes of agitation
  • Learn a model for de-escalation and relevant skills to de-escalate
  • Learn a model of strategies that reduce behaviours such as pacing, wandering, aggression, nocturnal disturbance and shouting
  • Recognise the warning signs of violence
  • Understand the basic theories and causes of violence for older people with moderate to severe dementia and functional illness
  • Recognise the risks associated with restraining older people
  • Learn physical techniques for safe holding for people with dementia when de-escalation and other strategies have failed
  • Have an awareness of personal safety issues
  • Have a basic understanding of legal rights/responsibilities regarding the management of violence and aggression
